Visual Check 16/1/2012

I put the varroa board in last week do a count to see if we needed to treat the bees with oxalic acid to keep the mite numbers down prior to the spring apiguard treatment. I looked this lunchtime and are pleased to say that the number was small around 2 per day so luckily no treatment required. Its an effective but strong treatment which can only be used once per season while the queen is not laying.

They have taken some of the bee candy but not much, hopefully they have been using their own stores in preference.

One or two brave/mad bees were flying but as its so cold hopefully the rest will stay tucked up inside.
